Head of Flying Operations-Western Australia



HeliSpirit is one of Australia’s leading tourism and charter helicopter companies with its head office located in Kununurra and a number of satellite bases throughout the Kimberley, Pilbara, and Goldfields in WA, and also in the Northern Territory. The business has been operating for 40 years providing a broad range of helicopter services including aerial work, passenger transport, contract and tourism services with our extensive fleet of 25 aircraft including AS350, B206, B206(L), R66, R44 and R22 types.   

 

About the Role


HeliSpirit is seeking a Head of Flying Operations (Chief Pilot) to lead our pilot team of up to 35 pilots. We require an enthusiastic, self-motivated and standards driven candidate with a strong focus on safety and aviation excellence. This is a senior management role and the successful candidate will be a team player with a drive to lead a fully compliant and industry best practice flight operations department.

Key Duties and Responsibilities


  • Responsible for safe and compliant management of the flying operations

  • Monitor and maintain the operator’s compliance with various legislation, including civil aviation legislation, the air transport AOC and the aerial work certificate

  • Monitoring proper allocation and deployment of aircraft and personnel 

  • Maintaining and reviewing of Safety Management System (SMS) as well as ensuring pilot adherence 

  • Oversight of flight crew rosters, allocating qualified and approved flight crew to tasks as well as maintaining a system to record flight and duty times to ensure compliance with limitations

  • Maintaining a record of licences and rating held by each flight crew member 

  • Checking of company pilot operational documents, records and logbooks

  • Ensuring all pilots comply with loading procedures specified for the Company aircraft and proper compilation of loading documents including passenger and cargo manifests

  • Monitoring flight crew operational standards, maintaining training records and supervising the training and checking of the Company flight crew

  • Conducting flight crew emergency procedures training and proficiency tests for Company flight crew in execution of emergency procedures

  • The production and amendment of the Company’s Operations Manual and any variation thereof and to liaise with CASA regarding the manual

  • Responsible for flight operations management of all Company bases 

  • Manage the recurrent training and checking activities of the company 

  • Some line pilot duties from time to time as required operationally

 

To Be Successful in this Role


You must be a highly motivated and experienced professional with a strong understanding of current and proposed aviation legislation, and a proven history of leadership in a similar role.


  • A commitment to achieve continual improvement in the flight operations of HeliSpirit

  • A desire to share your knowledge and skills with the pilot group for the benefit of HeliSpirit and the industry as a whole

  • A strong commitment to Aviation Safety 

  • A current CASA CPL(H)

  • Comprehensive knowledge of CASA aviation legislation, including recent and upcoming changes in legislation

  • Proactive approach to maintaining adherence to aviation legislation and legislative changes

  • Proven leadership and team management skills

  • Minimum 3000 hours total helicopter experience

  • Minimum 1000 hours turbine helicopter experience

  • R44, B206, AS350 endorsements

  • Helicopter low level rating

  • Bush experience including confined area landings and low-level operations


Desirable Qualifications / Experience


  • Aerial application rating with Firefighting experience

  • Longline experience

  • Instructor Rating
