Deputy Head of Flying Operations – Rotary Wing-Queensland
LifeFlight Australia is seeking an experienced and dedicated aviation professional to join our team as Deputy Head of Flying Operations, Rotary Wing based in Brisbane. In this critical role, you will play a key part in ensuring that our air operations maintain the highest standards of safety, compliance, and efficiency.
The Deputy HOFO – Rotary Wing is responsible for supporting the HOFO and LifeFlight to achieve effective, efficient and safe Helicopter operations. The role will undertake duties as delegated by the HOFO and deputise for the HOFO as required which includes ensuring Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) continuity if the incumbent HOFO is unable to execute his/her role and responsibilities for whatever reason.

Key accountabilities for this role include:
Compliance Assurance
Ensure activities under the LifeFlight Australia AOC comply with aviation legislation, regulation, and orders
Champion adherence to LifeFlight policies, procedures, manuals, and systems.
Flight Crew Oversight
Ensure flight crew members comply with training, recency, and currency requirements
Ensure compliance with LifeFlight’s FRMS or approved fatigue management system
Monitor continuous compliance with minimum required operational standards
Records Management
Maintain comprehensive registers recording licenses, ratings, and route qualifications.
Record duty and flight times to facilitate FRMS or approved fatigue system compliance.
Track training, recency, and currency events for flight crew members.
Document loading procedures specified for each aircraft type.
Documentation Control
Curate and maintain LifeFlight’s rotary operational and training manuals.
Manage reference libraries required under legislation, regulation, or order.
Rapid Response & Reporting
Immediately report actual or suspected operational or safety risks.
Address non-compliance with LifeFlight policies, procedures, manuals, and systems.
Swiftly report any non-compliance with aviation legislation, regulation, and orders.
Safety Oversight
Address safety reports and recommend corrective actions as needed.
Regulatory Expertise
Maintain sound knowledge of the Civil Aviation Act, CASR’s, CAR’s, and related documents.
EFB Administration
Oversee the administration of LifeFlight Electronic Flight Bags (EFB) in line with the Operations Manual.
Operational Support
While acting as HOFO, be accessible for immediate operational queries.
Assist operations and pilots with decision-making according to LFA and regulatory policy.
Operational Coordination
Ensure air operations and training align with the Act, Regulations, Civil Aviation Orders, and the Operations Manual.
Coordinate pilot rosters in collaboration with C3 and rostering.
Act as Pilot in Command on line operations as per LifeFlight’s operations manual
Teamwork and Communication
Maintain the highest professional standard of teamwork and cooperation.
Liaise and coordinate with HOTC or DHOTC for effective training planning.
Uphold effective communication with Base managers/senior pilots on all operational matters.
On-Call Support
Be contactable for on-call operational advice and decision-making when required.
Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Mandatory:
The minimum qualifications, skills and experience required of a Multi-engine Captain must be satisfied along with:
2500 Helicopter PIC
500 command hours (multi-engine turbine)
200 hours (night)
100 hours (instrument flight)
50 hours NVIS
3 command instrument rating renewals
Air Transport Pilots Licence (Helicopter)
Appointment will be subject to obtaining CASA approval as the Deputy/alternate HOFO
Experience in managing and supporting a team
ASIC Card
Working with Children Check clearance
Fully vaccinated
Desirable:
Senior management level experience in provision of aviation services
Endorsement/type Rating on AW139, Bell 412, BK117 and AS350 helicopters
Experience working in the aeromedical industry
Previous check and training experience
