Flight Operations Inspector – Helicopter and Agricultural Unit

About us

The Authority is a Crown entity, responsible for the safety and security of New Zealand’s civil aviation system. The Authority has two business arms – the security arm (the Aviation Security Service) which provides aviation security services at airports across New Zealand and the regulatory arm (the Civil Aviation Authority), which is responsible for the safety oversight of the civil aviation system.

About the role

The Flight Operations Inspector is a busy and rewarding role, where you can make a visible contribution to the safety of aviation performance. The role sits within CAA’s Helicopter and Agricultural Unit, this Unit is responsible for the regulatory oversight of NZ commercial helicopter operators and includes fixed-wing operators conducting agricultural operations.

As one of our Flight Operations Inspectors, you will focus on the safety oversight of organisations operating in the helicopter and agricultural sectors. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Assessment and certification (new and ongoing) of helicopter and fixed wing (agricultural) operators looking to join the industry

  • Surveillance of operators

  • Preparation of inspection, certification and monitoring reports

  • Analysis and assessment of Regulatory Compliance

In addition, you will be involved in safety education and promotion.

About you

This role will suit someone who is keen to positively influence and improve aviation safety performance, and to develop as a regulator.

The skills, experience and aptitudes we are looking for include:

  • Substantial helicopter pilot experience in a broad range of commercial operations, such as Longline, NVGs, Antarctic Operations and agricultural operations

  • Fixed wing agricultural experience is desirable preferably

  • Good knowledge of civil aviation regulations and safety management

  • Preference for specialist ratings e.g. IFR, instructor, multi-engine, agricultural

  • Have credibility and integrity within the aviation sector

  • Systems thinker with an ability to evaluate management behaviour and process

You will have excellent interpersonal skills and a background in building effective working relationships with both internal and external groups.
