Line Pilot (Rotary-Wing)


As a Line Pilot (Rotary Wing) with the Western Australia Police you will gain a range of training and experiences that are not available with other employers. You will have the opportunity to support the Tactical Response Group (TRG), assist police patrols and winch in night operations using Night Vision Goggles; Be involved in tactical flying operations with the TRG including assaults and live fire missions; Assist the Water Police and perform Search and Rescue roles on both land and sea throughout the State; Conduct day and night patrols to assist police on the ground, detect traffic offenders and locate stolen cars; Conduct drug detection and eradication operations; Air ambulance backup; Be involved in air surveillance operations and K9 transport and deployment.

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Ensures the safe and efficient operation of all rotary wing aircraft operated by the Police Air Wing by piloting the aircraft in accordance with the Civil Aviation Regulations, the Civil Aviation Orders and the Western Australian Police Air Wing Operations Manual.

SPECIALIST PRE-REQUISITES

It is a requirement that the position holder is successful in obtaining within a six month period and maintaining a NEGATIVE VETTING LEVEL 1 security clearance for the duration of their appointment in the position.

It is a requirement of the position that applicants undertake a psychological and flight assessment to determine their suitability for this position.

Position holder will be regularly examined for pilot and safety competence in accordance with CASA regulatory requirements.

Possession of an Australian Air Transport Pilot License (helicopter) or have passed the aeronautical knowledge examinations for ATPL (H) and able to obtain ATPL(H) within 6 months of employment.

Possession of a Night Vision Imaging Systems (NVIS) rating (Civil or Australian Military).

Current Australian Class 1 Aviation Medical.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applicants are asked to address the following nominated work related requirements:

Essential:

  1. Holder of an Instrument Rating (Helicopter). Completed at least 3 Command Instrument Rating Proficiency Checks (IPC) or Australian Military equivalent. Preferably Australian Instrument Rating, but consideration given to Foreign Instrument Rating.

  2. 2000 hours total helicopter experience of which 1000 hours must be Pilot in Command (PIC) and 500 hours must be as PIC of a twin engine helicopter.

  3. Proficient knowledge of the Australian Civil Aviation Regulations and Orders.

Desirable:

  1. Possession of a BK117 and/or AS365 type rating.

  2. Possesses a Winching/Rappelling endorsement.

  3. Possesses a Low-Level (LL) rating.

  4. Holder of (or have held) a helicopter Check and Training approval or a military equivalent.

Applicants are also required to submit a Comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV). Your CV should provide enough detail (dot points are sufficient) to allow the selection panel to assess your skills, experience and qualifications relevant to the Key Accountabilities of the attached Position Description Form.

The CV must also include the names and contact details of two (2) referees who can comment on the applicant’s ability to satisfy all of the Essential Work Related Requirements.

Please note: For applicants deemed suitable, all Essential Work Related Requirements listed in the Position Description Form will be assessed at some stage during the selection process.

OTHER CONDITIONS

Whilst this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other similar vacancies at Police Air Wing. In addition to this, should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position, then the panel may select another suitable applicant from this selection process. Both of these options remain valid for a period of twelve (12) months from the initial date of the appointment.

Integrity and criminal checks will be conducted if the recommended applicant for this position is not a current WA Police employee. Any relocation costs associated with appointment to this position may be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
